Why We Charge Fees for Floatzilla
At River Action, our mission is to foster the environmental, economic, and cultural vitality of the Mississippi River and its riverfront in the Quad Cities region. Each year, we organize Floatzilla, the largest paddle event on the Mississippi River, to bring together paddling enthusiasts and promote river stewardship. As a nonprofit organization, we strive to make this event accessible while covering the necessary expenses to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
Understanding the Registration Fees
We often receive questions about the registration fees associated with Floatzilla. It's important to note that these fees are essential to cover the various costs involved in hosting such a large-scale event. Early registration is just $35 through June 26th, after which it increases incrementally as the event date approaches. This fee includes a Floatzilla t-shirt, commemorative boat sticker, registration wristband, free parking, and access to shuttle services.
Breakdown of Event Expenses
To provide transparency, here are some of the key expenses that your registration fee helps to cover:
- Permits and Safety Measures: Securing a Coast Guard permit is necessary to ensure the safety of all participants by regulating river traffic during the event.
- Apparel Costs: Each participant receives a t-shirt as part of the registration package. With production costs nearing $10 per shirt, this constitutes a significant portion of the registration fee.
- Transportation Services: We hire buses to shuttle participants between launch points and the finishing area at Lake Potter/Sunset Marina, facilitating a smooth experience for everyone involved.
- Sanitation Facilities: Portable toilets are rented and strategically placed for the convenience of participants throughout the event area.
- Security Personnel: Ensuring the safety and security of all attendees is paramount, necessitating the hiring of professional security staff.
- Entertainment and Equipment: We provide live music, water toys, and rent audio equipment to enhance the overall event atmosphere and participant enjoyment.
- Venue Amenities: Renting tents, tables, and chairs allows participants to relax and enjoy meals comfortably at Sunset Marina.
Commitment to Fiscal Responsibility
While Floatzilla is not designed as a fundraiser, our goal is to break even after covering all event-related expenses. Any surplus funds are reinvested into River Action's initiatives aimed at promoting river and trail stewardship, conservation, and community engagement.
