Through the generous funding of the Iowa American Water Company, River Action is able to provide first floor elevation surveys to residents within the flood plains of Scott and Rock Island County. The surveys, which typically range in cost from $200-$2000, are performed by contractors hired by River Action. Surveyors will determine if there is a need for flood insurance, as well as if elevation is necessary, or if the home needs to be moved. Data from these surveys, though not an official flood elevation certificate, can help property owners better understand their risk. The free survey can support homeowners' decision-making and inform them if they need to pursue an official certificate, a Letter of Map Amendment, or other documentation.
If you reside in the Quad Cities and live within the flood plains of Duck Creek, Crow Creek, Spencer Creek, or the Mississippi River, call River Action at (563) 322-2969, or email Kathy Wine at kwine@riveraction.org.

Did You Know? After natural disasters such as floods, the natural reaction of residents is, inevitably, to return to their homes to assess the damage and begin cleanup efforts. However, many are unaware that several construction materials, such as insulation, roofing, and flooring, still contain asbestos. Disturbing debris and damaged structures can then release asbestos fibers into the air, posing serious health risks such as mesothelioma cancer. It's crucial to take proper precautions to prevent exposure and protect both residents and emergency responders from facing an additional challenge in the form of a health problem.
