David Murray
David Murray spent 10 years shipping out in the U.S. merchant marine, as an ordinary seaman and able-bodied seaman—mostly on blue-water tankers and container ships, but also as a deckhand on two Mississippi River towboats. He later taught writing, English and humanities at Maryville University in St. Louis for 18 years while holding various full-time and part-jobs in PR and communications. Since 2008, he has written full-time for The Waterways Journal, a trade weekly that has continuously covered the towing and barge industry since 1887. He lives in St. Louis, Mo.
