When cyclists think of crossing the country on bike, perhaps one of the major east-west touring routes comes to mind first. However, it would be a big mistake to overlook the Mississippi River trail. In its entirety, the Mississippi River Trail begins from its headwaters at the Itasca State Park in Itasca, Minnesota and travels all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico at the southernmost point in Louisiana. The Mississippi River Trail offers approximately 3,000 miles of on-road bikeways and pedestrian and bicycle pathways for the recreational enjoyment, health, conservation and tourism development of river communities, river states, and the nation. The MRT connects us to neighborhoods, commercial districts, industrial areas, recreational areas, and historical landmarks at the local, state, and national level.
